Scoring & Difficulty
How points and difficulty work in Sorting History and History Pinpoint. For strategy on how to use these to make games easier or harder, see Tips.
Sorting History: Difficulty Modes
Every placement earns or loses points based on the difficulty mode you pick.
| Mode | Correct | Incorrect | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friendly | +2 points | 0 (no penalty) | Learning, families, casual play |
| Competitive | +2 points | −1 point | Balanced challenge |
| Expert | +3 points | −2 points | High-stakes play |
In Friendly, your score can only go up. In Expert, two wrong placements wipe out the value of one correct answer.
Year-Based Scoring
Year-Based Scoring is a toggle in the game setup.
- On (default): Two events from the same year are interchangeable. Either order counts as correct.
- Off: The game requires exact month order, even within a single year. Months aren't shown on the cards, so you have to know them.
Year-Based Scoring Off combined with Expert mode is the hardest configuration available.
Categories Aren't All Equally Hard
The category you pick changes the difficulty.
- Harder: World Wars (many events packed into a few decades), TV History (most events within the last 70 years). Tight timeframes mean placement has to be more precise.
- Easier: Ancient Civilizations spans thousands of years — the gaps between events are large, so placement is more forgiving.

History Pinpoint: Precision Points
History Pinpoint asks for the exact year an event happened. Points are awarded by how close your guess is.
| Precision | Accuracy | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Exact year | Exactly right | 100 |
| Within 5 years | ±5 years | 50 |
| Within 25 years | ±25 years | 25 |
| Within 100 years | ±100 years | 10 |
| Outside | More than 100 years off | 0 |
