What Is Sorting History?
Sorting History is a history trivia game where you place historical events in the right position on a growing timeline. It's not multiple choice — you commit to where each event belongs, and the timeline builds as you play.
Every round teaches you something. Get an event wrong and you see exactly where it should go, with the year and historical context. Get it right and your confidence grows. Either way, you walk away knowing more than when you started.
The game has 13 categories and 1,300+ researched events — from Ancient Civilizations to World Wars, Scientific Discoveries to Music & Entertainment. One new category is added every two weeks, alternating community vote and editorial pick, so the game keeps growing.
How It Plays
Sorting History (core mode)
A category. A set of events. Place each one on the timeline where you think it belongs. The more precise your placement, the higher your score. Game lengths range from 5-round sprints to 30-round epics.
Daily Challenge
Five events, surprise category, under two minutes. A new challenge every day. Score 100% for "Flawless Victory!" or land above 75% for "Well Done!" Results come with a color-coded score ring and a spoiler-free share card.
History Pinpoint
Guess the exact year a historical event occurred. Swipe the year display to adjust your guess. Hold to accelerate through decades. The closer you get, the more points you earn.
Learning Mode
Turn this on in solo play and the game uses spaced repetition — events you get wrong come back more often until you master them. Events you've mastered fade into the background. Every session becomes targeted practice.
Pass & Play
Hand the phone to a friend. 2-6 players split into teams on the same device. Choose your categories, pick your game length, and see which team sorts history best.
Network Play
Connect two devices over WiFi for head-to-head competition. No accounts, no matchmaking — just pick up and play.
Two Paths to Master
Historian Path — Deep Expertise
Play any category and earn ranks from Student through Scholar, Professor, Expert, Authority, and Luminary to the coveted Laureate. Every category tracks progress independently. Each rank demands more games, higher accuracy, and consistent play.
Scholar Path — Broad Knowledge
Your global rank across all of history. Play broadly to climb from Apprentice through Chronicler, Archivist, Curator, Sage, and Oracle to Grandmaster — the ultimate rank, requiring mastery across 90% of available categories.
The Mastery Dashboard shows exactly what you need for your next rank: how many more games, what accuracy target, which categories to explore.
Cap a category at Professor and the dashboard surfaces the next step: jump into that category's Epic expansion (Historian-tier content with 500+ events each) and push toward Expert and beyond. The path forward is always one tap away. Already at the top? The dashboard nudges you to push another category to Professor — there's always somewhere to climb.
Three Difficulty Levels
| Level | Style | Who It's For |
|---|---|---|
| Friendly | No penalties, learn at your pace | New players, families, seniors, classrooms |
| Competitive | Moderate risk/reward | Regular players who want a challenge |
| Expert | High stakes, big penalties | History buffs who want to prove it |
There is no timer. Knowledge over speed, always.
What Makes It Different
It's not multiple choice. Every trivia game gives you A, B, C, or D. Sorting History makes you commit — place the event on a timeline and find out if you really know your history.
Real depth. 1,300+ events across 13 categories, with one new category added every two weeks. This isn't 55 cards you memorize in a weekend.
Two paths of mastery. The Historian Path rewards deep knowledge in individual categories. The Scholar Path rewards broad knowledge across all of history. No other history trivia app has anything like this.
You learn even when you're wrong. After every round, see the correct order with dates and context. Turn on Learning Mode for spaced repetition.
Works offline. Flights, commutes, camping trips — no internet required.
Family-friendly from the start. Designed for all ages. Pass & Play turns one device into game night for 2-6 players. No accounts to create, no setup friction.

The Developer Story
"I'm a television producer, not a game developer. My wife's favorite game has always been Chronology. We played it for ten years. One day she said, 'Some of these facts are getting old. I wish there was a way to play a sorting history game that never got old.' Nine months later, with the help of Claude, I can say yes."
Ra'uf Glasgow built Sorting History solo using AI-assisted development. A television producer by trade, he used SwiftUI, StoreKit 2, and Claude to create a native iOS experience with five languages, VoiceOver support, and offline play — all as a solo developer.
